KELANTAN MALAY TRADITIONAL SHADOW PLAY

From 1980’s our group has been active in Kelantan Malay Traditional Shadow Play. We were formerly known as Pasukan Sri Wayang. We have changed our name to Wayang Kulit Melayu Tradisional Kelantan since the year 2008. We have since then move to our present address at Kg. Morak. Here we have built a gallery to showcase the various aspects of the Shadow Play, naming it GALERI WAYANG KULIT MELAYU TRADISIONAL KELANTAN (Kelantan Malay Traditional Shadow Play Gallery). Within the gallery we have collected information with regards to the hierrachy of Kelantan Shadow Play, various musical instruments used in a Shadow Play, VCDs and CDs. We have also erected a complete panggung available and ready for a Shadow Play performance as well as a stage for giving practical lesson to the new generation of players/performers. We also provided a workshop for preparing/processing cow-hide, menebuk (crafting) to produces the puppets as required by the performers. At the workshop, we have expert craftsmen as their jobs on a full time basis.

Wayang kulit as a form of entertainment was very popular in the Malay community of the past. The level of popularity has since diminished because of the lack of understanding and appreciation by the current generation. Further, alternative entertainment is more attractive to the new generation, such that wayang kulit has been replaced by movies.

Intensive efforts should be taken not only to introduce wayang kulit but also to import the knowledge and skills in the performance of wayang kulit to successors, because ‘you do not love what you do not know’. The efforts to enhance the popularity of wayang kulit need to be ceaseless through an institution of cultural training to ensure that the heritage of the arts of wayang kulit continues among the Malay community.

All the information documented in this book are obtained through research, investigation, survey, interviews with wayang kulit group or troupe in Kelantan. Furthermore, the writer is also an accredited Tok Dalang who has undergone learning and training from the sequence of the heritage of Wayang Kulit. Studies made from reading various books/ writings on wayang kulit were also made by the writer so that all the facts are coherent and precise.
